How does divorce in Israel work if one of the parties isn't Jewish?

עורך דין גירושין

In the Israeli legal system, all of the issues regarding marriage and divorce are handled by special courts according to people religions.  That means that Jewish people get married and divorced in the Rabbinic courts, Muslim people get married and divorced in the Sharia courts and people from the different Christian religions get married and divorced in those particular courts for each religion (there are eight types of recognized Christian religions 9e.g. Protestant and Catholic) in Israel.

SO the question becomes what happens when people are of a different religion get married or divorced.  Well for marriage – the answer is simple – they simply cannot get married in Israel.  For divorce it’s a much harder question.  What happens in that case is that each of the religious courts is approached and they have to assert jurisdiction over the divorce or not.  Usually they don't.  After they don't assert jurisdiction the couple can have the marriage annulled by the family court.  This video talks about some of how the process works.
